Although we practice organic practices at Stringerstead Farms, we cannot label any of our goods organic. To be labeled organic requires a government inspection, large fees, and a process that would make our costs drastically increase. Stringerstead farms partners with a local feed grower that does not use any chemicals in their growing processes or harvesting for feeds we purchase. We choose very select and specific feeds from Resaca farms. Resaca feeds are not labeled organic due to the extra steps and costs, but they operate their farm as organic as possible with full transparency.
Resaca states “Canola is the only crop that we use as a “harvest aid.” We desiccate with an aquatic herbicide “diquat” to dry down the canola so we can harvest it. The diquat label requires a PHI (Pre-harvest Interval) of 7 days. We choose to wait 10-14 days to harvest after the product has been applied. The diquat herbicide is non-toxic to aquatic species; therefore, we believe it is the safest product to use.”
We choose grains and feeds from Resaca that do not contain Canola. When Resaca doesn’t have a clean option for our animals, we supplement with New Country Organics which is certified organic.
